Mike Young worked in several fields before settling in transportation. In 1978 Mike got his first job in transportation as a commercial over-the-road driver for Robert Heath Trucking out of Lubbock, TX. There he hauled mostly refrigerated freight, mostly produce throughout the continental United States and parts of central and western Canada for approximately 14 years. He then moved from the truck to the office for Robert Heath as a dispatcher. He shared dispatcher responsibilities for as many as 175 trucks which included load assignments, scheduling, dispatching (relaying load information to driver), load monitoring, maintenance and repairs, and other miscellaneous duties. In 1994 Mike along with another Heath dispatcher opened Heath’s brokerage division, K & M Trucking, Inc. Mike helped build K & M and successfully operated it for 17 years. He and his wife then opened a branch office for another broker/carrier, Bramel Trucking, Inc. Mike continued to build both his customer book of business and carrier base for 3 years at Bramel before moving to a better financial opportunity with an up-and-coming broker/carrier MSB Logistics, Inc. In total Mike has 40 years of trucking, dispatching and brokering with a focus on refrigerated and perishable freight. He has earned the trust and forged the lasting relationships with sizeable shippers and with a great number of loyal carriers.
Velda Baker also worked in several fields before settling in transportation. It was in 1987 Velda got her start in transportation with R & T Truck Lines, Lubbock, TX. Her responsibilities included dispatching drivers and assigning trucks to loads. Velda also managed all aspects of R & T’s accounting including quarterly reports to the Texas Employment Commission & to the IRS, weekly payroll, bank deposits, reconcile bank statements, posting, filing, 1099’s and W-2’s. All forms of office management. From 2003 to 2004 she then served two years with Texas Freight, Hutto, TX in the same capacity including dispatching, AP/AR, payroll and office management. In 2005 Velda joined Mike Young at K & M where she dispatched, brokered, and managed the office including AP/AR, payroll, Quick Books, quarterly reports, and 1099’s & W-2’s. Velda went with Mike to open the office for MSB Logistics, Inc. From 2014 to 2018 she has continued to broker freight, dispatch drivers, schedule loading and delivery appointments, manage AP/AR, file TEC & IRS quarterly reports, and manage commissions. In total Velda has slightly over 30 years of industry experience with an emphasis on accounting and bookkeeping.
Allen Nace began his career in 1988 as an assistant traffic manager at Berties, John & Irene, Phoenix, AZ. Within 6 months he was promoted to traffic manager. Berties was a poultry firm and Allen’s primary responsibilities were those of a shipper. He was in charge of vetting and securing carriers to transport the product that Berties bought and sold. Rate negotiations, setting up shipping programs, procedure improvement, as well as all of the scheduling and dispatch duties associated with shipping their product. After two years Allen made the transition to transportation broker taking a position at Truckers Exchange, Colton, CA. Sales, negotiations, dispatch and scheduling were among his responsibilities. In 1992 Allen and a co-worker opened a California branch office for Texas based Alamo Brokerage Corp. Alamo closed that California branch and moved Allen to their San Antonio home office. As operations manager he helped grow Alamo’s brokerage business, helped open and grow Alamo Transportation from 2 trucks to 45 trucks, and he originated and operated an LTL/Consolidation dock with an annual volume in excess of 25,000 pallets. From 2003 to 2013 Allen managed the San Antonio branch office of Allen Lund Company – a national transportation brokerage with 40+ offices and annual gross sales of $500,000,000. At Allen Lund he managed an office of 12-14 hiring dynamic employees, annual reviews, P&L, office and individual sales, 1 year planning, 3 year planning, 5 year planning and driving annual office gross sales of $20M. He successfully opened a branch office for another 40+ office national transportation brokerage – John J Jerue Truck Brokers. In 2015 Allen joined Mike and Velda at MSB Logistics, Inc helping grow customer base, annual sales and optimizing truck routing (MSB Trucking) increasing efficiency and customer capacity. A total of 30+ years of nearly every aspect of trucking and transportation brokerage.
In May 2018 Mike, Velda and Allen established American Freight Brokers. The three share an obvious chemistry and a love for the business.
