AFB believes in trust and good faith. Life deals all of us unexpected blows. When the time comes that we can help those in need we won't hesitate. Maybe money was loaned for repairs or we have faced a claim that is beyond the means of a carrier. In which case we are happy to help .... as a temporary solution to the problem. Not as gift or charity. In most cases money loaned is repaid and everyone is able to continue moving forward. Sometimes there is not always a happy ending. Below are people / companies that taken advantages of our kindness. Beware.
Manuel Mesa, M & A Truck Line, Yoakum, TX. One of the worst. Long time carrier and "friend". In need of truck repairs borrowed $4,902 in July 2018. After borrowing, he would make a payment or two and then borrow more. This went on for several months until he stopped hauling for us and eventually stopped responding to phone calls or texts. He has an outstanding balance of $4,408. Try to help a friend and he'll boink you every time.
Raul Vargas, Jr, All Ways Loaded Transport, Alton, TX. Needed $1,773 for repairs while under a load. We loaned him the money. Weeks and weeks of promising to mail a check or stop by still nothing. Finally, after 6 months he did make a payment of $1,000. Outstanding balance of $773 still not paid to this date.
***** 05/12/2020 UPDATE *****
Raul has submitted a partial payment of $250. His show of good faith does not remove him from this wall, but it is a huge step toward putting him in good standing.
Slightly different circumstances here. We did a fair amount of business with Plus 5 Cattle Co (Ted R Sawyer, Amarillo, TX owner). Toward the end they had a few hiccups (missed deliveries, late pickups, etc). We were fined by a customer for a missed delivery about a month after the fact. They had been fined by their customer in the amount of $500. We paid the fine and in turn planned to recover from Plus 5. After a few phone calls they mailed us check. Right around that time they filed for bankruptcy. Either the bankruptcy or possibly a stop payment prevented the check to clear. We haven't been able to reach anyone since.
